Cotton vest inspired by historic façades, exploring tactile texture through contrasting yarns and knitted structures.
Inspired by the granular textures found on the façades of Vienna's historic districts, the Vienna Vest translates architectural surfaces into knitwear. Their varied textures and subtle rhythms are reflected through contrasting materials and stitch patterns, creating a garment that invites both visual and tactile exploration.
Two contrasting cotton yarns were chosen for their distinct textures. A fine cotton worked in garter stitch is paired with a thicker popcorn cotton knitted in stockinette. Alternating the materials in stripes of different heights allows each yarn to retain its own character, creating a fabric with depth and tactile variation.
The vest is knitted flat from the bottom up in three panels. The front panels are worked first, followed by the back, before the pieces are assembled with mattress stitch. Long i-cords are then tied into Irish clover knots, forming the vest's distinctive closures while adding another handcrafted layer of texture.
Light, breathable and tactile, the Vienna Vest explores how material, stitch and construction can work together to translate architectural surfaces into knitwear.
